Euclide en couleurs vives Près d'un siècle avant que Mondrian ne rende célèbres les lignes géométriques rouges, jaunes et bleues, le mathématicien du 19ème siècle Oliver Byrne a utilisé ce schéma de couleurs pour les figures et diagrammes dans son édition très inhabituelle des Éléments d'Euclide de 1847. L'auteur précise dans son sous-titre qu'il s'agit d'une mesure didactique destinée à distinguer son édition des autres : « Les Éléments d'Euclide dans lesquels des diagrammes et symboles colorés sont utilisés à la place des lettres pour faciliter l'apprentissage. » Chaque proposition est présentée en italique Caslon, avec une initiale de quatre lignes, tandis que le reste de la page est un véritable festival de rouge, jaune et bleu. Sur certaines pages, seules les lettres et les chiffres sont imprimés en couleur, éparpillés sur les pages comme de petites fleurs sauvages et exigeant un alignement méticuleux des différentes plaques de couleur pour l'impression. Ailleurs, des carrés, des triangles et des cercles pleins sont imprimés dans des couleurs vives, exprimant une verve que l'on ne reverra plus sur les pages d'un livre jusqu'à l'ère de Dufy, Matisse et Derain.
