Ter ere van het 90-jarig bestaan van uitgeverij A.G. Schoonderbeek is dit prentenboek uit 1893 herdrukt in de oorspronkelijke uitvoering. De 19de eeuwse tekst heeft men met hedendaagse grammatica aangepast. Het klassieke, populaire maar treurige verhaal met goede afloop van H. Andersen wordt nagenoeg letterlijk op de voet gevolgd. De illustrator, T. van Hoytema, een volgeling van de beroemde Engelse illustrator Walter Crane, huldigde het principe dat tekst, illustratie, band en lay-out een decoratieve eenheid moeten vormen. Dat principe is in deze uitgave uitstekend geslaagd. In paginagrote, fraai omkaderde illustraties heeft men de tekst in met de hand geschreven drukletters onder, boven en tussen de platen verwerkt. De lithografieën staan in enkele spaarzame, secundaire kleuren gedrukt. Historisch gezien is deze uitgave waardevol en interessant, maar voor jonge kinderen niet zelf te lezen vanwege archaïsch woordgebruik, wat slordige schrijfletter in kapitalen en onbekende afbrekingsstreepjes. Voorlezen vanaf ca. 8 jaar.
