Fontanel is de koosnaam van Michael Joffe, 55 jaar oud, getrouwd, vader van een tweelingzoon en –dochter, en naar zijn mening de enig normale in de grote familie Joffe. Zejde heeft één moeder, Judith, en drie mogelijke vaders. Een van hen, Jakob, schenkt Judith zijn verzameling van duizend gele kanaries en vraagt haar ten huwelijk. Hoewel zij weigert met hem te trouwen, treft hij toch alle voorbereidingen voor de bruiloft. Hij leert dansen, naait een trouwjurk en bestelt een rabbi, in de veronderstelling dat ze dan wel móet komen opdagen...

In 1927 ontvlucht de familie Levi - Abraham, Sara en de tweeling Jakob en Esau - Jeruzalem en vestigt hun bakkerij in een boerendorp. Als voor de bijziende tweeling één bril wordt gekocht, zet Jakob deze op. Hij wijdt zijn verdere leven aan het bakken van brood, terwijl Esau voor periodieke blindheid kiest, een verzameling van geuren en citaten aanlegt, het dorp verlaat en in Amerika een succesvol auteur wordt die over brood schrijft. In 'de kus van Esau' keert hij terug naar zijn vaderland om zijn zieke vader te verplegen en vertelt hij het wonderlijke verhaal van zijn familie.

Refael Maier is als inspecteur van een waterbedrijf werkzaam in de Negev-woestijn. Hij is de oudste nog levende man van zijn familie. Zijn vader, grootvader en beide ooms zijn op jonge leeftijd omgekomen bij ongelukken.
