    • In the year 2190, the American Catholic Eclectic Church rules a post-apocalyptic America ravaged by nuclear war, enforcing its eleventh commandment above all others: "Be fruitful and multiply!" Contraception is deemed the worst of crimes, leading to overpopulation amidst the ruins left by the conflict. Despair, misery, and terrible diseases dominate the landscape. Some ailments could be cured, but church doctrines prohibit such remedies. A man, raised on Mars as a descendant of Earth colonists, travels to this hellish world for research purposes and is horrified by what he finds. He soon discovers that there is no way for him to return to Mars. He must learn to navigate this new reality and understand the society that has turned its people into a machine that despises individuality.

The flare bloomed, and he yanked down on the little lever. It could have been worse. They hit the ground, bounced twice, and turned over. The ship was a mess when Feldman freed himself from the elastic straps of the seat. Chris had shrieked as they hit, but she was unbuckling herself now. He threw her her spacesuit and one of the emergency bottles of oxygen from the rack. "Hurry up with that. We've sprung a leak and the pressure's dropping." Lester del Rey was an American science fiction author and editor at Del Rey Books. He was awarded the E. E. Smith Memorial Award for Imaginative Fiction, Balrog Award and the 11th SFWA Grand Master.
