Die Post an den Sohn Wilhelm bietet einen facettenreichen Einblick in die elterliche Welt, während die in Griesheim eintreffenden Feldpostbriefe und -karten ein Bild vom soldatischen Alltag zeichnen, das von den Klischees des heldenhaften Kämpfers und des armen „Frontschweins“ abweicht. Die Mutter Wilhelms motivierte Nachbarn, Freunde und andere, die bei ihr einquartiert waren, zum Schreiben von Briefen, was zu einem regen Austausch führte, obwohl diese Menschen nicht zu den Gebildeten zählten und Schwierigkeiten beim Schreiben hatten.
