Walter Crane

    Walter Crane was een Engelse kunstenaar en boekillustrator, beschouwd als een van de sterkste bijdragers aan het kinderkamer-motief dat het genre van de Engelse geïllustreerde kinderliteratuur in zijn ontwikkelingsfase in de late 19e eeuw zou vertonen. Zijn werk bevatte enkele van de kleurrijkere en meer gedetailleerde beginperioden van de kind-in-de-tuin-motieven die vele kinderrijmpjes en verhalen decennialang zouden kenmerken. Hij maakte deel uit van de Arts and Crafts-beweging en produceerde een reeks schilderijen, illustraties, kinderboeken, keramische tegels en andere decoratieve kunsten. Crane wordt ook herinnerd vanwege zijn creatie van een aantal iconische beelden die geassocieerd worden met de internationale socialistische beweging.
