The chief theorist of Art Brut and what has come to be known as Outsider art, Jean Dubuffet (1901-1985) created a genre and a moniker for a whole realm of previously ignored art--by the insane and the mentally ill, by children and by those simply too compulsive to move smoothly through the official channels of the art world. Dubuffet arrived at his conception of a "raw art" in 1942, after passing through and sloughing off Surrealism and other early twentieth-century avant gardes, and after a spell as a wine seller and puppet maker. By 1945 he was collecting examples of Art Brut, and had begun to write polemical essays attacking the cultural logic of post-Renaissance western art, instead advocating the potencies of a visceral primitivism. This beautifully designed clothbound edition of Dubuffet's influential writings gathers the artist's essays and interweaves them with reproductions of his late maquettes for his monumental walk-in pieces.

  • Tony Cragg is one of the most significant and boldest sculptors of the present day. His work is characterised by a surprising and immense richness of formal inventions that also manifests itself in his drawings since the 1980s ndash; perceptional metamorphoses of the objective world, of landscape and the figure. His first Early Forms were produced in the 1980s. They were developed from a skin that pushes in dramatically, twist dynamically and ambiguously recalls early forms of development. They are sculptures of amazing suppleness ndash; also in the group of works that revolve around the human face and its transformations. In doing so, the concepts of material and energy are given particular importance. In more than 120 drawings as well as the most significant sculptures produced since 2000, this catalogue shows which references between micro and macro structures are central for Cragg's artistic thought and what fascinates the artist about draughtsmanship ndash; the visualisation of the invisible, of waves, particles, rays, and currents in space between the bodies. This catalogue contains a comprehensive overview of Cragg's drawings and his most important sculptures of the past eight years. Published on the occasion of the exhibition Tony Cragg: Drawings and Sculptures at Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe, February ndash; May 2009, and Museum der Moderne Salzburg, June ndash; October 2009. English and German.

  • ‘The microscopic characteristics of the works on paper, of the materials of sculpture making and of the tools and the people that use them make up a fascinating hidden world that is omnipresent within and also applies to the very walls, floor, doors and windows of my studio.’ Tony Cragg

Between 1986 and 2000, Anthony Cragg’s sculptural oeuvre underwent a signifcant transition. The artist moved from making sculptures using found materials and objects to a more studio-based practice in which the found materials themselves became the subject and content of his sculptures. This publication begins where the previous volume, „Sculpture 1969–1985“ left off. It serves as a guide, aiming to facilitate a better understanding not only of the chronological sequencing of Cragg’s works, but also of the primary concerns that have in uenced them over time. Cragg’s sculptures of this period attracted considerable critical interest. Some of the most prominent art critics of the day engaged with Cragg’s oeuvre, and a number of their essays have been reprinted here, offering fresh insights into the sculptor‘s work. Texts by : Lewis Biggs, Germano Celant, Lynne Cooke, Demosthenes Dawetas, Catherine Grenier, Thomas Mc Evilley, Peter Schjeldahl, Jon Wood

  • Anthony Cragg (*1949) is one of the most important international sculptors of the present day. The British artist, who lives in Wuppertal, was Rector of the Academy of Art in Düsseldorf until 2013 and has won many awards. From the beginning his creative work has found inspiration in Nature as a model. Cragg's large - format sculptures of metal, marble, wood and glass are derived from organic natural shapes and present a fascinating aesthetic. In the foreground is the material as the sculpture's strongest means of expressi on. In the time - consuming development processes during which the work is formed and the material and surface are treated, Cragg's sculptures literally "grow" into the space, so that they have an almost intrinsic character or with their convolutions and pro tuberances evoke endlessly growing structures. This volume documents new works as well as specimens from the sculptor's collection of fossils and minerals for the first time - a remarkable première
