Der jüdische Schriftsteller Philo von Alexandrien (gest. ca. 50 n. Chr.) hinterließ ein umfangreiches Werk in griechischer Sprache, das bibelexegetische und philosophische Abhandlungen umfasst. In dem kleinen Traktat „Das Leben eines Politikers oder über Josef“ verbindet er beide Bereiche. Philo bietet eine philosophische Nacherzählung der biblischen Josefsgeschichte, in der Josef als hellenistischer Herrscher erscheint. Die Nacherzählung wird durch drei Exkurse ergänzt, die lose mit dem Haupttext verknüpft sind und sich mit dem Ethos und Selbstverständnis des Politikers in einer antiken, demokratischen Polis befassen.
