Eine Konstellation, die zu Turbulenzen führen muss, Maria und ihren Vater an den Abgrund treibt und sie vor die Alternative stellt, den Begehrlichkeiten Wittichs nachzugeben oder ihr Leben zu verlieren. „Die Bernsteinhexe“ lautete der Roman, mit dem der Usedomer Wilhelm Meinhold 1843 in Deutschland schlagartig Berühmtheit erlangte und der noch heute viele Leser findet. Wenig bekannt war und ist jedoch, dass es eine frühere Fassung gab: „Die Hexe von Coserow“, geschrieben um 1826, viel knapper als die spätere lange Version gehalten und frei von deren fantastischen Übertreibungen.
