John Leighton was een Engelse kunstenaar die gevierd werd om zijn boekillustraties en ontwerpen voor boekomslagen. Zijn talent voor design kwam al vroeg tot uiting in "Suggestions in Design..." (1852), een werk dat zijn overtuigingen over de geschiedenis van design uiteenzette. Leighton behoorde ook tot de eersten die ex libris bestudeerden en de verzameling ervan aanmoedigden, wat bijdroeg aan de oprichting van een Ex Libris Society, waarvan hij vicevoorzitter werd. Zijn artistieke output steunde sterk op historische decoratieve motieven, die hij herhaaldelijk toepaste in boekillustraties en honderden omslagontwerpen.
