Although they have gained recognition in a wide variety of fields, Baumschlager & Eberle have always been interested in homing, a field in which they now specialise. Here, Baumschlager & Eberle proffer their theories on housing based on the know-how they have gained over the years. They deal with the question of typology, the optimisation problems with regard to area, cost, ecology and energy, social issues, the question of location as well as ground-plans, the relationship between outdoor and indoor living space and quality of cladding. Housing, however, is seen here from a pragmatic as well as a theoretical point of view: a wide variety of buildings and projects by the architects are presented, offering various solutions to the questions raised.

The Rohner harbor office building in Fussach, designed by B&E Baumschlager-Eberle, is a fascinating steel, glass and concrete configuration that appears to float in mid-air, echoing the form of a space capsule or a bird standing on one leg. Awkwardly elegant, the precisely designed building is composed of an eight-meter-long container-shaped shell of concrete that connects with the ground below by only a single slim footing. The interior of the shell is lined with larchwood paneling, creating an inner tension that dissolves at both ends of the building as it opens out into floor-to-ceiling glass windows that face Lake Constance at one end and the inland countryside at the other. This avian, spaceship-like building is nevertheless characterized by the very earthly features of an open structure, clear lines and uncompromising simplicity. First in the Archive Kunst Architectur series, this book features photographs by Eduard Hueber as well as plans and drawings by the distinguished Baumschlager-Eberle team.

Vorarlberg, das westlichste Bundesland Österreichs, hat seine eigene Architektur. Hier wird der Holzbau gepflegt, hier gilt das Einfamilienhaus als die mit Abstand beliebteste Wohnform. Kleine, kostengünstige Siedlungen im verdichteten Flachbau und Einfamilienhäuser waren die ersten Bauaufgaben, mit denen sich die Arbeitsgemeinschaft Baumschlager/Eberle profiliert hat.
