Der poetische Nachlass eines Melancholikers Thomas M. Disch war einer der zentralen Vertreter der New Wave, jener ebenso progressiven wie literarischen Richtung der Science-Fiction-Literatur der sechziger und siebziger Jahre. Berühmt machten ihn Romane wie »Camp Concentration« (1968), »334« (1972) und »On Wings of Song« (1979) sowie zahllose Erzählungen. Zeitgleich zu seiner Karriere als Prosaautor veröffentlichte er unter dem Namen Tom Disch Lyrik. Vor allem in den Jahren vor seinem Suizid am Unabhängigkeitstag des Jahres 2008 bestückte er seinen Blog »Endzone« mit glänzenden Gedichten, in denen er schonungslos ehrlich, tieftraurig und nicht selten mit bissiger Ironie über ein Leben schrieb, das für ihn längst geendet hatte.
