HAMLET: Hamlet je tragédie o dánském královském rodu, kde po smrti krále Dánska jeho ovdovělá žena, Královna, provdá se za králova bratra Claudia, nyní Krále. Příběh začíná dva měsíce po králově smrti, kdy Horacio, jeden z nejvěrnějších služebníků, přivolá Hamleta na cimbuří, kde stráž viděla ducha, jenž vypadá jako bývalý král. Hamlet se dozvídá, že Claudius jeho otce zabil tím, že mu nakapal jed do ucha ve spánku. Hamlet slibuje pomstu za otcovu smrt. Hra ukazuje, jak touha po moci nezná mezí; ušlechtilí zabíjejí, poddaní se klaní a čest či ctnost jsou výsadami hrdinů. KRÁL LEAR: Král Lear je jednou z největších Shakespearových tragédií, kde se drama lidského údělu odehrává na obrovských pláních země i nebe. Hra je konkrétní, s důrazem na fyzické detaily, a zároveň univerzální, zkoumá svět otřásající se v základech. V srdci této tragédie je obraz poutníka a cesty; Lear putuje ze svého sídla do Doveru, ale jeho cesta má hlubší význam. Putuje od svých dcer Regan a Goneril k Kordelii, od pýchy k pokoře, od autoritářství k soucitu a od koruny, symbolu moci, k odpuštění.

Jedna z vrcholných tragédií Williama Shakespeara je drama zločinu, svědomí a trestu a divadelní sonda do hlubin lidské duše, z nichž se rodí zlo. Tradition holds that Shakespeare wrote the comedy The Merry Wives of Windsor at the request of Queen Elizabeth, who was fond of the character Falstaff and wanted to see him in love on stage. However, Shakespeare cleverly subverts this expectation, as Falstaff is not in love with the two Windsor wives but rather with their husbands' money. His plan to acquire this wealth ultimately fails, and in the comedic conclusion of the play, he is ritually punished and ridiculed in Windsor Park. Z díla nejvýznačnějšího švýcarského spisovatele 19. století, mistra výchovného románu a moderní realistické novely, přináší tento svazek výbor z jeho lyriky a dva cykly novel – Sedm legend (1872) a Epigram (1881). První část dvoudílného románu: Viléma Meistra léta učednická, dílo psané na sklonku XVIII. stol. je prvním klasickým výchovným románem. Hrdinou je měšťanský syn, který protestuje proti životu ve stavovské společnosti a hledá svobodu v umění, zejména v divadle. Konečně nastupuje cestu k tomu, stát se platným členem společnosti. To se uskutečňuje v tajném spolku (literární obraz zednářských a iluminátorských spolků). Tento přerod se neuskuteční naráz, ale pozvolným hromaděním zkušeností a pod tlakem událostí. Román psaný na přelomu dvou dějinných epoch, zachycuje střetnutí dvou světů – měšťanského a šlechtického. Hlavní hrdina je zosobněním kladných vlastností.

Dvě fantastické povídky: Zachýsek zvaný Rumělka (1819) a Zlatý kořenáč (1819). Předmluvu napsal Vladimír Kafka.
