Marcos prostřednictvím svých textů vystupuje jako vizionářský politický analytik a současně jako „interpret“ domorodého myšlení a kultury.„První vesnice, do níž jsme v roce 1985 vstoupili jako zapatisté, je vesnice Starého Antonia. Zde působil svým způsobem jako překladatel, když nám vysvětloval, čím jsme byli a čím bychom měli být. Současně probíhal proces proměny vlastního nitra zapatismu. In alternating chapters, Zapatista leader Subcomandante Marcos and the consistently excellent Paco Ignacio Taibo II create an uproarious murder mystery with two intersecting story lines. The chapters written by the famously masked Marcos originate in the mountains of Chiapas, Mexico. There, the fictional “Subcomandante Marcos” assigns Elias Contreras—an odd but charming mountain man—to travel to Mexico City in search of an elusive and hideous murderer named Morales. The second story line, penned by Taibo, stars his famous series detective Héctor Belascoarán Shayne. Héctor guzzles Coca-Cola and smokes cigarettes furiously amidst his philosophical and always charming approach to investigating crimes—in this case, the search for his own “Morales.” The two stories collide absurdly and dramatically in the urban sprawl of Mexico City. Was passiert in Chiapas, in den Gebieten, die zwar vom Militär umstellt, nicht aber besiegt wurden, bei den Menschen, die die »erste Revolution des 21. Jahrhunderts« initiiert haben? Im Gespräch mit der Journalistin Laura Castellanos analysiert Marcos, was die zapatistische Bewegung seit ihrem Anfang, dem Aufstand vom 1. Januar 1994, gewonnen und was sie verloren hat.
