In the American Northwest, a particularly deadly winter unfolds as rising FBI star Laurel Snow hunts a serial killer with a chilling modus operandi. Bodies have been found near churches, charities, and counseling centers, each victim having been given Valentine’s Day heart-shaped candies stuffed into their throats. The victims appear to be good men with families and strong community ties—at least until Laurel and her team begin their investigation. The case takes a shocking personal turn when Laurel discovers her father, a former pastor she never met, among the dead. Now, in addition to solving her father's murder, she seeks to uncover the truth about his past. Complicating matters is her troubled half-sister Abigail, a brilliant sociopath determined to prove that they both inherited their father's malignant narcissism.
