Spring filled the air and the earth; its intoxicating longing and restlessness seeped into the small, dark home of the Mole. It is no wonder that the Mole suddenly slammed his brush down on the floor, exclaimed, "To the devil with it! Let springtime have its way," and rushed out the door without even putting on his coat. The Mole dug, burrowed, and scratched at the earth with his paws, all the while murmuring to himself, "Up, up, faster to the top!" Suddenly, his snout popped into the sunlight, and the Mole tumbled into the warm meadow grass. Abandoning his spring cleaning, the Mole wandered through the meadows and stumbled upon a river he had never seen before. Here, the earnest creature was met with more surprises that would change his life. With new friends—the clever Water Rat, the thoughtful Badger, and the stubborn Toad—the Mole experiences a multitude of incredible adventures. The restless Toad steals a strange but fast... wonderful... enormous... car and ends up in jail. Later, the friends must heroically confront the dangerous inhabitants of the Wild Wood who have taken over Toad's estate.
