The story follows Brion Bayard, an American diplomat who is kidnapped in Stockholm by agents from a parallel universe where the American Revolution never occurred. In this alternate world, the British Empire dominates, and Bayard learns he must confront a ruthless dictator—his own alternate self—to prevent an impending attack from another parallel reality. As he grapples with the complexities of identity and power, Brion realizes that the situation is far more intricate than it initially appears.
