In a Balkan state shortly after World War II, opposition politician Deltschev is accused of treason and terrorist conspiracy. A sensitive British playwright, Forster, reports on the show trial for an American newspaper and becomes entangled in a web of dark machinations, treacherous power struggles, and a dangerous conspiracy. Soon, the stakes rise, and it becomes a matter of life and death not only for Deltschev but for Forster as well.
