The story follows a renegade Catholic priest who, after an annulment from his wife—who became a nun—embarks on a tumultuous journey from Ohio to establish a settlement in west central Minnesota called Rush Lake. Facing conflict with the Bishop, he creates a self-governed colony that encounters numerous challenges. After his death, his loyal followers secretly transport his body to Oregon to found a new community, amid ongoing controversy surrounding his life and burial outside the local Catholic cemetery.
