Set in 1935 Cannero, Lake Maggiore, the story follows Paola and her daughter Eva, who earn a modest living through embroidery for wealthy tourists. While Eva yearns for the excitement of Milan and dreams of a Hollywood career as a make-up artist, she feels trapped by her obligations and the expectations of her small-town life. As she assists the local padre with preparing bodies for burial, an enigmatic Englishman arrives, drawing her into a web of intrigue and unfulfilled desires.
