The narrative follows Sue and her friend Kit as they embark on their nursing careers in New York City, working with the Visiting Nurse Service of the Henry Street Settlement. Their assignments immerse them in the vibrant yet challenging environments of the city's slums, where they care for a diverse range of patients, from infants to the elderly. While their uniforms grant them access, they often depend on the help of Sergeant O'Day. Living in a cramped Greenwich Village house, their busy schedules leave little room for personal time amidst their demanding work.
