An amateur detective becomes involved in solving a case of kidnapping and double murder. As elections approach, a young woman, the stepsister of one of the two most influential politicians in the city, is abducted. Initially motivated by curiosity and a desire for adventure, Sam, with the help of his secretary, Natalie Rice, also seeks to assist her father, a former city treasurer recently released from prison for alleged embezzlement. He discovers that everything is interconnected and that the alibi appears to be closely tied to the length of a candle at the crime scene. This book is a classic detective novel featuring a gradually unveiled mystery, a limited number of suspects, and a likable hero who outshines official investigators with his skills.
