In 1924, May Marshall seeks refuge at her father's farm in Keswick, Virginia, after a painful experience leads to her expulsion from college. Returning home with a secret, she discovers her father's orchard has turned into a moonshining operation. Ignoring warnings from her childhood friend Byrd, she becomes involved in the illegal business. When her father is arrested, May flees to New York City, determined to reinvent herself as May Valentine and pursue a career as a costume designer. The vibrant Jazz Age offers both opportunities and temptations, leading her from mending sheets at the Biltmore Hotel to designing costumes for a troupe of African American entertainers heading to Paris. As May revels in her newfound success, she becomes increasingly willing to blur moral lines for a chance to go abroad. When Byrd arrives to bring her back home, she pushes him away, trying to escape her past. However, in Paris, her luck falters, forcing her to confront a painful secret. May faces a critical choice: succumb to failure and addiction or seek the truth and make amends. Ultimately, she must find self-forgiveness before she can reclaim what her heart truly desires.
