The story of a boy named Jano is one of the few prose works by Fraňo Kráľ aimed at youth. Similar to the poignant tale of Mišo, Hanka, Paľko, and Evička Čenková, this book immerses readers in the harsh environment of the poorest layers of Slovak society during the peak of the economic crisis in the 1930s. Through the experiences of young Jano, readers encounter the difficult lives of children who know only hard work and hunger, rather than gentle affection or play.
