In 1854 Boston, life in Mrs. Daggatt's orphanage is far from amusing, especially for Jingo, the most rebellious apprentice among the orphans. With little hope of escape, his only prospect is a grim apprenticeship as a chimney sweep under the strict General Blackmouth. Jingo's spirits lift when a mysterious gentleman named Mr. Peacock arrives, claiming to be his father. Mr. Peacock is a whimsical character, embarking with Jingo in a rickety carriage on an extraordinary treasure hunt. He changes names as easily as he changes clothes, possesses artistic talent, knows secret languages, and is both clever and eccentric. Despite Jingo's certainty that Mr. Peacock is not his real father—who was a one-legged man—he begins to enjoy this unexpected adventure. As they navigate a world filled with surprises, Jingo discovers excitement and a sense of belonging he never thought possible.
