When Isabelle and Nicolas marry, they welcome a son, but Nicolas rejects the child, believing he is not the father. The love between them cools. After Provence joins France, Nicolas is imprisoned on suspicion of rebellion. Isabelle seeks to help her husband through a mysterious stranger with whom she once had an affair, who promised to assist her in times of need. As they reconnect, Fabio Tornabuoni, known as "Il Terzo," takes Isabelle to Paris, where he has the chance to free Nicolas, who is sentenced to death.
