Hendrick McAlister, the son of a shopkeeper from Grahamstown, suffers under the tyranny of his brothers and leaves his home. At the foot of the Snow Mountains, he meets the old Boer farmer Hermanus and helps him revitalize his farm. Hendrick earns the trust of the Boers, who are fighting against British oppression and are making plans to emigrate.
