Exactly 10 months, 9 days, 8 hours, and 12 minutes separate the world from its doom. A billion-ton celestial body approaches Earth: Shiva. Computer calculations leave no doubt that it will strike the third planet. An advance guard of larger and smaller meteors has already reached Earth, causing gigantic devastation. Entire cities are being obliterated. While the drug-addicted U.S. president remains incapacitated, pursuing his sexual interests, and followers of the apocalypse cult dance naked in the streets to welcome Shiva's arrival, a team of American and Soviet astronauts fights a lonely battle against the approaching giant. The first rescue attempt fails. A nuclear strike does not divert Shiva but only causes it to glow. Its fiery breath licks at the Earth. And the enormous mass continues to move toward the beleaguered planet.
