A dead woman lies in a party dress with a broken neck on the veranda steps. It appears to be an accident, but a good detective's eye notices details that suggest otherwise: a wedding ring on the floor, a broken glass, a clean ashtray, and cigar stubs in the trash. Commissaris de Gier and Adjudant Grijpstra suspect foul play and soon find themselves in danger. There are simply too many suspects in this case: the daughter, the business partner, the neighbor—and a monkey.
