The hero of this novel is D.J., an 18-year-old "genius" from Texas, who travels with his father to the wilds of Alaska, where a man is only considered a man if he can present the still-warm head of a slain grizzly bear. Surrounding their quest for the great gray bear is a wild tangle of impressions and associations, filled with wordplay and ideas.
