The extensive and fragmented literature on adolescence presents challenges for both students and scholars. Students face an overwhelming amount of information with insufficient coherence across topics, hindering deeper understanding. Scholars encounter a lack of integrative visions to connect various theories, research programs, and practical concerns. In this advanced text, the author provides a constructivist synthesis of the literatures of cognitive, moral, and identity development, drawing from classic theories to more pluralist research and theorizing of the late 20th century. Without requiring prior knowledge of psychology, basic concepts are introduced and coordinated to help students engage with expert concerns and allow experts to view those concerns from a broader perspective. In this updated edition, the author further develops the conceptualization of advanced psychological development in adolescence and early adulthood and proposes a conception of rational moral identity as a developmental ideal. Unlike the typical changes of early childhood, advanced psychological development cannot be understood as a progression through universal stages to a universally attained state of maturity. However, progress is achievable through rational processes of reflection, coordination, and social interaction.
