A novel of pursuit and fllight set in Austria and France in the dark years of the late 1930s. Hans and Inge Wendler, Jewish intellectuals imperiled by Hitler's burgeoning power, make their way through a Europe dissolving into chaos, at a time when their own life together is threatened by Hans's obsessive affair with a mysterious young woman. Told in the form of diaries, letters, interviews, and poems, and shaded by the ideas and life of German Marxist and mystic Walter Benjamin, who appears as a character in the narrative.
