Christian Friedrich Hebbel (1813-1863) was a German dramatist and lyricist. He was opened to the wider world through a two-year travel scholarship from the Danish King Christian VIII. He initially traveled to Paris, where he wrote the tragedy Maria Magdalena, completed in 1843, which remains his greatest success. In Vienna, where Hebbel lived until his death, he was able to devote himself uninterruptedly to his literary production. There, he also received public recognition and was ultimately the first to be awarded the newly established Schiller Prize. Hebbel primarily wrote dramas, including Agnes Bernauer (1851), Gyges and His Ring (1854), and The Nibelungen (1861). Throughout his life, Hebbel demonstrated social and political engagement. In 1849, he unsuccessfully ran for the Frankfurt National Assembly, and his works often address the social issues of his time. Other works by the author include: Judith (1840), The Diamond (1841), Anna (1847), Julia and King Peter (1847), Schnock (1848), Herod and Mariamne (1848), and Mother and Child (1857).
