World Heritage Sites represent unique cultural or natural treasures of the world. Caves of the Slovak and Aggtelek Karst were declared as a part of the World Heritage based on decision of UNESCO World Heritage Committee at the meeting in Berlin on December 6, 2005 as a sustainable example of geological and geomorphological processes. World Heritage Committee in Cairns, Australia, in 2000 approved the addition of the Dobšinská Ice Cave to the area. The caves and geological formations of the Aggtelek and Slovak karst have an outstanding importance by their extraordinary richness of forms, their complexity, and that they are relatively untouched and concentrated in a small area. The karst phenomena has created a variety of shapes and habitats, which are significant from a biological, geological and paleontological point of view. In the temperate zone, caves do not occur in such complexity anywhere else in the world. At the present time in Slovakian part of the World Heritage have been registred 1184 caves (6 caves open for public) and in the Hungarian part 280 caves (6 caves open for public).
