Set against the bleak coast of East Anglia, the small theological college of St. Anselm’s becomes the backdrop for a chilling mystery. The body of a young ordinand, the son of the flamboyant businessman Sir Alred Treves, is discovered buried beneath sand. Treves, accustomed to getting his way, insists that Commander Adam Dalgliesh investigate his son’s death. Although the circumstances appear straightforward, Dalgliesh is drawn to the college, recalling fond summers spent there. However, upon his arrival, the college is rocked by a shocking murder, plunging him into a complex and violent mystery. P. D. James masterfully weaves a classic detective story with rich psychological and emotional depth, creating an intricate plot filled with horror and suspense. The narrative features unforgettable characters and vividly captures the East Anglian landscape and its religious context. This work reaffirms James's status as a master of the crime novel and one of the finest contemporary novelists, showcasing her unparalleled skill in storytelling.
