In a suspenseful tale of secrets and betrayal, Jodi Compton presents a gripping narrative centered on a woman's desperate search for her missing husband, leading her into a dark journey filled with harsh truths and damaged lives. Detective Sarah Pribek, a complex and instinctive character, faces an unimaginable nightmare when she discovers her husband, fellow cop Michael Shiloh, has vanished. Shiloh was meant to be in Virginia for FBI training, but when Sarah learns he never arrived, a sense of foreboding engulfs her. The discovery of his packed bag beneath their bed confirms her worst fears: he has disappeared. As a seasoned missing-persons investigator, Sarah embarks on an investigation reminiscent of those she has conducted with her ex-partner, Genevieve, before a brutal crime shattered their lives. Delving into Shiloh's past, she uncovers family secrets and hidden lives, tracing his upbringing in a religious household in Utah and the rift that distanced him from his family. With each revelation, Sarah's perception of her husband shifts, transforming him from a lover and friend into a stranger. As she navigates this web of shocking surprises, she confronts the haunting possibility that her worst fear—Shiloh's death—might be less painful than the truths she is yet to uncover. This novel masterfully intertwines the ordinary with the extraordinary, creating a compelling mystery that explores family, friendship, and loss.
