At once an atlas and comprehensive survey, the New Dutch Water Defence Line examines a unique aspect of the Dutch landscape that was once designed as an extensive military defence system of forts, refuges and floodable polder areas. The maps presented here explore the coherence of the line as a strategic landscape, while also capturing the rich variety of historical locations. Presented around four different themes, the topography of the landscape itself is charted, along with the system designed for flooding, the strategic defence network, and recent developments. A number of essays are also included which place the defence line in historical perspective.
