   De magiërs van Imardin hebben zich teruggetrokken achter de hoge muren van hun legendarische magiërsgilde. Slechts eenmaal per jaar doorbreken ze hun afzondering, als ze in naam van de koning de straten van Imardin ontdoen van zwervers, armen en ander ongewenst volk. Dit noemt men De Zuivering. De jonge Sonea is opgegroeid in de sloppenwijken en heeft geleerd de magiërs te haten. Op een dag komt ze tijdens De Zuivering oog in oog te staan met de magiërs en voor ze het weet gooit ze een steen naar het magische schild dat hen omringt. Tot ieders verrassing doorboort de steen het schild waarbij een van hen aan het hoofd geraakt wordt. De magiërs zijn geschokt. Nooit eerder heeft een ongetrainde uit het gewone volk een dergelijk vermogen laten zien. Sonea slaat op de vlucht, geholpen door haar vrienden en het dievengilde, dat in haar een waardevolle aanwinst ziet. De magiërs beseffen dat Sonea is wat ze het meeste vrezen: een ongetraind magiër buiten hun bereik. Ze moeten haar vinden voordat haar magie losbreekt en haar vernietigt - met de stad erbij.
