    Hlavní postavou je šestnáctiletá Helen Hamiltonová, která vyrůstá na americkém ostrůvku Nantucket. Bolestně si uvědomuje, že se od ostatních vrstevníků liší – nejen svojí výškou, ale i schopnostmi. Už odmalička se kolem ní dějí záhadné věci, umí například superrychle běhat a má nadlidskou sílu, kterou se snaží před okolím skrývat. Má obrovský strach, že tyto „abnormality“ značí, že je nějaká zrůda, a tak se snaží co nejvíc splynout s davem. Pak na ostrov zavítá početná rodina Délosových, kteří se sem přesunuli ze Španělska, a všechno se mění. Helen začne být napjatá a přecitlivěle reaguje na jakoukoli zmínku o novousedlících, přestože je nezná. Rodina Délosových jí pomůže zjistit, co je vlastně zač. Zjistí, že není žádné monstrum, ale pochází z linie řeckých polobohů. Postupně se dozvídá, jak to mezi polobohy chodí a jakými schopnostmi je obdařena.
