V tomto závěrečném dílu, pokrývajícím roky 1947–1949 si můžeme přečíst další sloupky „Jak to vidím já“, které známe už z předchozího svazku, Orwellovy recenze (např. na román Jádro věci Grahama Greena nebo esej „Lidská duše za socialismu od Oscara Wildea“), ale samozřejmě i úvahy politické. (1942–1944), přináší žánrově rozmanité útvary od slavných sloupků „Jak to vidím já“ přes literární recenze až po imaginární rozhovor s Jonathanem Swiftem či krutě sebezpytné obsáhlé eseje Ohlédnutí za španělskou válkou nebo Anglický národ. Na jednu stranu Orwell uplatňuje nesmiřitelný postoj levicového politického komentátora, který analyzuje soudobou anglickou společnost, nemilosrdně tepe sociální nerovnost a odhaluje ideologické pokrytectví. V jiné poloze však uplatňuje smysl pro detaily, jichž si všímá v životě lidí vnímaných jako individuality, nikoli jen bezejmenná masa tvořící dohromady množinu anglického národa či španělských republikánů.
