Het werkje werd dan ook in 1559 op de index geplaatst en in 1579 opnieuw, maar nu 'gezuiverd', uitgegeven. Lazarillo van Tormes was tijdenlang net zo beroemd als de Spaanse klassiekers Don Quichot en La Celestina. Bredero ontleende aan het boek de twee hoofdfiguren van zijn Spaansche Brabander: Joncker Jerolimo Rodrigo en zijn knecht Robbeknol.
