However, philosopher David Hume decided to withdraw this and another essay ( Of the Immortality of the Soul ). Both these essays were published anonymously and posthumously in 1777. The current edition follows the 1755 version. In this essay, Hume examines suicide by stating that the gods granted the powers to humans to live and therefore end their own lives. In addition, he argues that committing suicide does not harm society. As often, Hume sides with the individual’s autonomy to live one’s life.

Hume se v ní soustředí zejména na výklad čtyř nepřímých vášní pýchy, studu, lásky a nenávisti v prožívání vlastního a cizího já (self). Neopomíjí přitom zdůraznit roli, kterou v tomto prožívání hraje zakoušení pocitů a postojů druhých vůči naší osobě a silná lidská tendence k vzájemnému srovnávání. Stejné východisko Hume následně používá i pro výklad takových emocí jako je soucit, úcta, závist či škodolibost. V závěru knihy předkládá Hume i svou vlivnou kompatibilistickou teorii vůle, podle níž lze svobodu lidské vůle sloučit s požadavkem její zákonité příčinné determinace.

In this, his 'second enquiry' in which he concerned himself with morals, he sought out to place morality on entirely empirical grounds. Hume considered this one of his best works. While many find Hume's arguments compelling, that they are still raised today suggests that others remain unconvinced. Indeed, morality--its source, whether it is objective or subjective, etc.--is a matter of fierce debate to this day. Hume aimed to settle the issue once and for all.
