In a world of knife-edge glaciers, a hideous crime leads two maverick detectives to confront the limits of human evil. A corpse is discovered wedged in an isolated crevice. It has been horribly mutilated. The brilliant but violent ex-commando Pierre Niémans is sent from Paris to the French Alps to lead the investigation. Meanwhile, in a town in south-west France, Karim Abdouf, a young Arab policeman, is trying to find out why the tomb of a young child has been desecrated. Richard Papen, zoon van een eenvoudige benzinepomphouder in Californië, schrijft zich in als student bij het prestigieuze Hampden College, ver van huis aan de oostkust. Al direct bij aankomst raakt hij gefascineerd door het selecte clubje van vijf rijke studenten rond de charismatische docent Julian Morrow. Richard stelt alles in het werk om in die excentrieke en arrogante elite, die de antieke Griekse beschaving bestudeert, te worden opgenomen. Dat lukt, al heeft hij het gevoel dat hij niet van alles deelgenoot wordt gemaakt. Pas in het tweede semester komt hij erachter, dat vier van zijn nieuwe vrienden tijdens een zorgvuldig voorbereid Grieks bacchanaal een toevallige passant op gruwelijke wijze hebben afgeslacht. In hun hoogmoed hebben de jonge studenten een plaatselijke boer aan een experimenteel onderzoek opgeofferd. Deze geheime moord leidt tot een keten van leugen, bedrog en zelfs tot een tweede moord waarbij Richard wel betrokken is.

At the invitation of the Swiss ornithologist, Max Boehm, a young French academic, Louis Antioch, agrees to undertake a journey tracing the flight of the stork in order to solve the mystery of the birds' disappearance. But before the trip, Boehm dies of a heart attack in suspicious circumstances.

Questo narratore, descritto come un uomo di grande statura con un viso aperto, vive esperienze sorprendenti e improbabili che gli capitano senza cercarle. La morte lo sfiora più volte, ma lo respinge, mentre la vita sembra seguirne un disegno misterioso, noto solo alla madre defunta che lo aveva promesso a Dio. Le storie di quest’uomo, che ha «molto veduto», sono infinite e non pretendono di avere risposte. Le sue parole si stagliano su uno sfondo dorato della vecchia Rus’ di Kiev, mentre i racconti si popolano di vagabondi, prostitute, padroni, mercanti e nobili, tra cui la zingara Gruša, simile a «una serpe lucente». Leskov, lontano dalle teorie, trasmette una dispersione di casi che evoca un azzardo teologico, richiamando l’idea di salvezza per tutti, anche per i suicidi. La storia di un seminarista suicida introduce questo corteo di narrazioni. Landolfi tradusse l’opera tra il 1962 e il 1963, raggiungendo un risultato magistrale: il tono dell’oralità permea il testo, rendendolo un unico respiro. L’opera originale è del 1873, mentre la traduzione apparve nel 1967.
