When a second baby is found, high up in a glacier, the paths of the two policemen are joined in the search for their killers, a trail that embroils them in the mysterious cult of the Blood-Red Rivers.

De verborgen geschiedenis is een erudiete, bedwelmende roman over de lotgevallen van de jeunesse dorée die door haar eigen morele hoogmoed ten val komt. Richard Papen tracht zijn arm en troosteloos leven te ontvluchten door zich aan te melden bij een gerenommeerd college aan de Amerikaanse oostkust. Tot zijn eigen verbazing wordt hij opgenomen in een groepje arrogante en excentrieke studenten die zich op het bestuderen van de Griekse beschaving hebben gestort. Richard geniet van het geheime idyllische verbond waar hij deel van uitmaakt. Maar pas in het tweede semester wordt hij ingewijd in het drama dat zich heeft voltrokken: tijdens de nabootsing van een Dionysisch ritueel hebben vier van zijn vrienden in bacchantische furie een plaatselijke boer afgeslacht. Eenmaal in vertrouwen genomen en in de hoogmoed van de elite meegesleept, zet zich ook in Richard onherroepelijk de overtuiging vast, dat het enige lid van hun groep dat hun geheim nog zou kunnen verraden, moet worden geëlimineerd.

La voce che sentiamo è quella di un «viaggiatore incantato» che racconta le sue avventure su un battello nel lago Ladoga. Questo narratore, descritto come un uomo di grande statura con un viso aperto, vive esperienze sorprendenti e improbabili che gli capitano senza cercarle. La morte lo sfiora più volte, ma lo respinge, mentre la vita sembra seguirne un disegno misterioso, noto solo alla madre defunta che lo aveva promesso a Dio. Le storie di quest’uomo, che ha «molto veduto», sono infinite e non pretendono di avere risposte. Le sue parole si stagliano su uno sfondo dorato della vecchia Rus’ di Kiev, mentre i racconti si popolano di vagabondi, prostitute, padroni, mercanti e nobili, tra cui la zingara Gruša, simile a «una serpe lucente». Leskov, lontano dalle teorie, trasmette una dispersione di casi che evoca un azzardo teologico, richiamando l’idea di salvezza per tutti, anche per i suicidi. La storia di un seminarista suicida introduce questo corteo di narrazioni. Landolfi tradusse l’opera tra il 1962 e il 1963, raggiungendo un risultato magistrale: il tono dell’oralità permea il testo, rendendolo un unico respiro. L’opera originale è del 1873, mentre la traduzione apparve nel 1967.
