Ve čtvrtém díle vzrušující ságy z prehistorické doby pokračuje dobrodružné putování Ajly a jejího přítele Jondalara.Jejich láska prošla tvrdou zkouškou,než se rozhodli spolu žít a odejít do Jondalarova domova,země Zelandonců.Putují v opačném směru stejnou cestou,kterou před léty prošel Jondalar se svým bratrem Thonolanem,od moře Beran údolím Matky řek,od jejího širokého ústí až k prameni, a čeká je překročení velkého ledovce.

Ajla nemohla jinak. Musela opustit Klan. Cestovala pozdním podzimem, až našla údolí, ve kterém chtěla přečkat zimu. Nalovila spoustu zvěře, ale zajíci a křepelky jí přes zimu nevystačí. Proto musela ulovit větší zvíře. V jejím údolí byla spousta koní a ona se rozhodla, že jednoho uloví. Nevěděla, jak lovci Klanu loví větší zvířata a prakem si na koně netroufla. Nakonec vykopala díru v zemi a stádo koní nahnala tím směrem. Doufala, že aspoň jeden kůň do jámy spadne. Tak se opravdu stalo a Ajla ulovila svou první větší kořist. Ale pak si všimla, že klisna, kterou ulovila, měla hříbě. Na malé hříbě doráželi hyeny, Ajla je odehnala, ale hříbě zabít nemohla. V údolí byla sama a hříbě bylo taky samo. Tak mu Ajla začala dělat náhradní matku.
