El éxito comenzó a sonreírle gracias a sus famosas Leyendas y a sus Cartas literarias a una mujer, donde expuso sus teorías sobre la poesía y el amor. Sin embargo, fueron sus Rimas las que le reportaron mayor fama, ya que iniciaron la corriente romántica de poesía intimista inspirada en Heine y opuesta a la retórica y ampulosidad de poetas románticos anteriores, lo que resulto totalmente novedoso.
