John Wyndham

    10 juli 1903 – 11 maart 1969

The Earth was holding a fantastic contest... An international prize of over a million dollars was being offered to the first man to complete an interplanetary journey. Target -- Mars. It was a race against time. The U.S., Russia, and England were again competitors, fighting for fame an fortune. Dale Curance of England didn't need the fortune. He was a millionaire. He was an eccentric. But most of all he was an adventurer and he was determined to win. But winning was not going to be that easy. There were going to be many surprises. And they all began with the stowaway aboard Curtance's ship. A stowaway to Mars. A woman.

Coronet Books recently published STOWAWAY TO MARS, one of John Wyndham’s most famous stories. The title story of this collection, though it can be read as a separate entity, pursues the ideas thrown up by the original novel, drawing them to some fascinating conclusions. Of course, we are now well used to the idea of Man On The Moon, we have become blasé as to the possibilities of inter-planetary travel. But imagine two expeditions to Mars, one British, the other Russian, both in the process of discovering a mechanical race, invented and produced by the Martians as they believe their specie to be dying. The other four novellas in this collection give further evidence of John Wyndham’s genius at invention, characterisation and sense of movement.

    • In 1951 John Wyndham published his novel The Day of the Triffids to moderate acclaim. Fifty-two years later, this horrifying story is a science fiction classic, touted by The Times (London) as having “all the reality of a vividly realized nightmare.” Bill Masen, bandages over his wounded eyes, misses the most spectacular meteorite shower England has ever seen. Removing his bandages the next morning, he finds masses of sightless people wandering the city. He soon meets Josella, another lucky person who has retained her sight, and together they leave the city, aware that the safe, familiar world they knew a mere twenty-four hours before is gone forever. But to survive in this post-apocalyptic world, one must survive the Triffids, strange plants that years before began appearing all over the world. The Triffids can grow to over seven feet tall, pull their roots from the ground to walk, and kill a man with one quick lash of their poisonous stingers. With society in shambles, they are now poised to prey on humankind. Wyndham chillingly anticipates bio-warfare and mass destruction, fifty years before their realization, in this prescient account of Cold War paranoia.

    • John Wyndham wrote strong, imaginative fiction years before fame came his way, and this is a collection of some of his pieces from those days. Already remarkable are his sense of movement, his sense of invention, his sense of style. The title story of this collection foreshadows frighteningly such later novels as THE KRAKEN WAKES and THE MIDWICH CUCKOOS with its suggestion of time when man is no longer the dominant creature on Earth. And The Last Lunarians and The Derelict of Space show how well he researched his material, long before space ships had struck out for the moon and the idea of inter-planetary travel had become commonplace. This is truly another fascinating piece of evidence of John Wyndham's remarkable talent as a seer and storyteller.

But what was it, exactly? A meteor, perhaps - just one of those pieces of rock from outer space that occasionallyfall down on to the planet Earth. But meteors don't usually make strange hissing sounds . . . In this collection of four of his famous science-fiction stories, John Wyndham creates visions of the future that make us think carefully about the way we live now.

    • This short book is a translation of some of the myths of the Yoruba people of Nigeria. It is a history of the creation of the world, the gods, and humanity, and the early days of the sacred city of Ífè, the traditional center of Yoruba culture. The text was recited to the author/translator by the high priests of Ífè, and the book is still cited in some books on traditional Yoruba religion and thought today. It has undeservedly become quite rare, as it can be considered a minor classic in the field.

    • This book was written to be a training manual and practical guide aimed at the surgical trainee, continence nurse-specialist or the working specialist who wishes to develop an incontinence practice. Although several excellent definitive textbooks already exist on most of the subjects covered in this book, there has been very little directed specifically at these readers. They have particular pressures on their time and need a straightforward and clear discussion of theory and common practice to help them prepare for postgraduate examinations or form the basis for sound clinical pratice in day-to-day management.
