On January 25-27, 2001, physicians and researchers from various countries gathered to share advancements in head and neck cancer research at the Fourth International Symposium on Metastases in Head and Neck Cancer. This biannual event, previously held in Kiel, took place for the first time in the historic town of Marburg an der Lahn. The meeting facilitated a blend of reports from basic researchers and clinical studies, highlighting the growing importance of biological markers. Key findings included the amplification of the EGF receptor and cyclinD1, HPV involvement, and mutant p53, all linked to prognosis and potential therapeutic targets. Advances in antibody use for tumor detection and therapy promise improved treatment outcomes. Furthermore, the identification of genetic changes through various methods is leading to new target genes that enhance understanding of cancer progression and offer novel therapeutic avenues. Clinical studies emphasized the necessity of enrolling more patients in treatment protocols to improve survival rates. Overall, the symposium fostered intimate discussions on innovative ideas, reviewed existing outcomes, and encouraged collaboration and clinical trials for future progress in the field.
