Transforming South Africa

The transformation of South Africa began in 1994 with the ANC's promise of “A Better Life for All.” This process, characterized as soft transformation, focuses on multiculturalism, reconciliation through the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, affirmative action, and black economic empowerment. While it has somewhat eased tensions between the white minority and Africans, it has failed to effectively combat unemployment and social inequality, as recent data reveals. Currently, 50% of the economically active population is unemployed, and the average income of black families has declined since 1994. Consequently, the gap between the affluent (both white and black elites) and the impoverished (predominantly black) continues to widen. The ongoing transformation process is likely to become more challenging in the next decade. This work explores economic and spatial issues, including changing Modes of Production and Residential Dynamics, alongside a range of political and cultural topics from African Neo-liberalism to African Renaissance. It also suggests alternatives to the current strategy of soft transformation.
