All of J. J. P. Oud’s buildings, except for his row houses in Stuttgart's Weißenhofsiedlung, are located in the Netherlands, yet they gained significant recognition across Europe and the USA. His career peaked in the 1920s and early 1930s, which is the focus of this publication. Oud's works initially appear heterogeneous, with a timeline of avant-garde De Stijl projects and 'white modernism' that reveals inconsistencies. This reevaluation is based on a catalog of his works. As a founding member and key architect of De Stijl, Oud was pivotal in early collaborative efforts. His residential designs in Hoek van Holland and the Kiefhoek neighborhood established him as a pioneer of the 'International Style.' An exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art showcased his works alongside those of Le Corbusier, Gropius, and Mies van der Rohe, creating a canon that still influences modern perspectives. The reception of Oud's work was shaped by 1920s photographs that depicted his buildings as pristine examples of white modernism. However, on-site observations reveal a different reality. The acceptance of sloped roofs and Oud's preference for symmetry, often obscured in contemporary photographs, challenge the conventional understanding of modernism. Thus, special attention is given to the executed and partially existing buildings.
